What is mother-of-pearl? Some shelled molluscs (like nautiloids, mussels, snails, and clams) produce a shimmery, iridescent material called nacre. It’s composed of calcium carbonate, like the shell, but it’s incredibly smooth and strong and can protect them from irritants and parasites. They essentially coat anything hard in this material, whether it’s the inside of their shell or some trespassing object. The inner layer of shell that’s coated in nacre is known as mother-of-pearl, while objects separate from the shell that are coated in nacre are pearls.
