Description

Striking magnesite nugget earrings with antiqued silver plate and 316L grade stainless steel earwires. The magnesite is a lovely, complex dark brown with shades of deep yellow and green.

Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate within the calcite group (calcium carbonate). It can form when magnesium rich rocks like serpentine are exposed to carbon dioxide-rich solution, or when carbonate rocks are exposed to magnesium-rich solution. Magnesite typically appears as white within a grey matrix (the veins running through the rock) and is very similar in appearance to howlite. It’s quite porous, which combined with the light, flat colour, lets it take dye very well. It’s frequently dyed blue and used as imitation turquoise.
