Petrified wood is a particular form of fossilized wood. As is generally the case with fossil formation, the organic material (wood) has been mineralized, forming stone. Because of complexities in the process specific to petrified wood, the 3D cellular structure of the wood is often retained. This is what leads to the gorgeous wood detail associated with petrified wood!
